There's something about August light that I can never quite put into words, though I keep trying. It's golden in a way that feels different from July's gold — lower, longer, already carrying the knowledge that it's going to be asked to leave soon. The Welsh Pagan calendar marks the first of August as Gŵyl Awst, the harvest festival, and I think that name holds the whole feeling of the month in it. We're still in summer, but the wheel has begun its turn.
This month's newsletter leans into all of that — the ripeness, the threshold, and the particular magic of August in Wales.
The biggest news is something I've been looking forward to saying for a while: I've written THE END on Only in Fairy Tales. Monmouth has been an extraordinary place to lose myself in, and I'm now into the quieter, more careful work of reading back through what I've written and making it better. My copy partner and editor are booked in for the 6th of August, and I'm aiming for a release on the 9th of December. I've also been quietly investing in a refreshed look for the author brand — new cover art, a redesigned moon logo, and a media kit in progress, all put together with a wonderful digital illustrator I found on Fiverr.
Over in the Notable Dates section, August is genuinely stacked. The National Eisteddfod is celebrating its 850th anniversary in Pembrokeshire this year, which feels like a moment worth marking. The Brecon Jazz Festival fills the town's streets and halls from the 6th to the 9th. Green Man takes over the Brecon Beacons from the 20th to the 23rd. And the 5th sees the start of the Celtic tree month of Hazel and Salmon — the month of wisdom, inspiration, and the knowledge found at the root of things.
There are also two book birthdays this month: Fire in the Rain turns eight on the 1st, and Feathers and Foxes turns two on the 19th.
The free books section is full of paranormal, science fiction, fantasy, and romance reads — exactly the thing for long summer evenings that are starting to cool at the edges.
